This is the introduction:

A Different Reality is Within Reach….
Will you Help Build It?

Dear Friend of The Nation:

Is it just us or has the spin in this year’s Presidential debates achieved an Orwellian permanence?

Facts be damned. Reality…who cares?

The Vice presidential debate was full of “what the…?!” moments, as Paul Ryan cravenly ducked Joe Biden’s challenge to Romney to take responsibility for insulting 47% of Americans as malingerers and “takers.”

And Ryan did his best to appropriate the battered middle class as the GOP “base,” wrapping them in a verbal blanket woven of the most outrageous lies…

“It took the president two weeks to acknowledge that [the Libya attack] was a terrorist attack.” FALSE

“Medicare and Social Security are going bankrupt. These are indisputable facts.” FALSE

“[Unemployment is rising] all around America.” FALSE

How Can We Do a Permanent “Reality Check”?

Simple. The antidote to lies and spin is truth.

And that means “outing” both sides and shining a probing light on myriad other topics The Nation doggedly hunts down week after week for nigh on 150 years. Truth is what The Nation specializes in.

But it’s expensive to find the truth and publish it and keep going. So we need your help. That’s why I’m writing you today.

We invite you to become a Charter Member of a brand-new program for Nation reader-activists. People committed to finding solutions to today’s political gridlock and advancing the progressive agenda.

It’s our new Nation Builders program—designed specifically to keep The Nation’s pugilistic, in-your-face reporting and commentary going strong for years to come.

Join The Nation Builders Today

We seek the strong, the smart, those hungry for debate. The bold and the fearless, those who won’t accept the status quo. The dreamers defined by principles and idealism. And the doers who take action for what they believe in.

Together, we can build something better. A different reality, if you will—one that doesn’t mistake spin for debate, or opinion for fact.
