Climate Change and the Developing World: Briefing on Copenhagen.

Whatever the agreement at Copenhagen, the most vulnerable people, those already suffering from poverty, are experiencing the impacts of climate change now. How can a deal at Copenhagen change this? What are the essential agreements that will allow millions of people in developing countries to adapt to the new threats?

Based on our experience of working with communities struggling with increased flooding, droughts, shifting seasons and other weather events, Practical Action is providing a final briefing on what needs to be achieved this December if the futures of vulnerable communities in the developing world are to be safeguarded against climate change.

Speakers include:

Chair: Colin Challen MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group
Benito Müller, Energy and Environment Director, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. Based on the extensive research he leads at Oxford University, Dr. Müller will discuss the international funding mechanisms that can generate and disperse sufficient finance for adaptation
Gehendra Gurung, Head of Reducing Vulnerability Programme, Practical Action Nepal, and member of the Nepali government’s climate delegation, will speak from his own experience about the challenges on the ground
Rachel Berger, Climate Change Policy Adviser, Practical Action, and co-author of Understanding Adaptation, will outline the key elements in the negotiations that can enable developing countries to implement their adaptation plans, pitching these against the political backdrop that influences the chances of a positive outcome.
