Supermodel Gisele Bündchen Becomes UN Environmental Ambassador

Nairobi/New York, 20 September 2009 – The face of some of the world’s most
exclusive products is to become the new face of global environmental

Brazil-born Gisele Bündchen, among the most recognized top models of all
time, has been designated Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) at a public event in New York’s Washington
Square Park.

As Goodwill Ambassador, Gisele Bündchen will help UNEP in its mission to
raise awareness and inspire action to protect the environment.  The darling
of the fashion industry will take on some of the biggest threats facing the
planet, climate change and environmental degradation.

Gisele Bündchen, passionate environmentalist, said:

“The environment has always been my passion.  I grew up in a small town and
I had the opportunity to live surrounded by nature.  I couldn’t have asked
for a better childhood.  We must act now, so future generations have the
same opportunity.  Mother Earth is our fundamental life-support system, and
by becoming aware and responsible now, we can assist in preserving the

She added:  “I have been working on environmental issues for a long time
and agreed to become a Goodwill Ambassador to be part of a global and
far-reaching organization.  Now it’s about action on a global scale to
secure a healthy future for the next generation, wherever they live in the

Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director said:
“Gisele is among a handful of talented individuals and personalities that
have a truly global reach. She is also a committed and passionate
environmentalist.  UNEP is delighted to welcome her on board as a Goodwill
Ambassador so that with her help, we can make environmental action a global
brand and a life-style choice, from New York to Nairobi and from Sao Paolo
to Shanghai.”


Seal the Deal! is a UN-wide outreach campaign to galvanize political will
and public support for reaching a comprehensive global climate agreement in
Copenhagen in December.

Gisele’s personal initiatives for the environment include:

1. Agua Limpa (Clean Water) aims to replant deforested areas in the Amazon,
and rebuild riparian protection areas. Água Limpa is a project created by
the Bündchen family and aims to reforest the vegetation along the river
banks in the region where Gisele was born.…

2. GiGi and the Green Team, a web-based cartoon series that features Ms.
Bündchen  as an environmental heroine, aiming to empower girls to protect
the environment.

3. Gisele is a board member of the Rainforest Alliance

4. She donated a percentage of profits from her line of sandals – Ipanema
Gisele Bündchen – to protect Amazon Rainforest water sources through the “Y
Ikatu Xingu” program and other projects such as “Nascentes do Brasil”, “De
Olho nos Mananciais” and “Florestas do Futuro”, which works for the
protection of the Atlantic Forest. This year they will also help the TAMAR
Project, which aims to protect Brazil’s sea turtles.

5.Y Ikatu Xingu – Instituto Socioambiental (ISA)  – Saving the waters of
the Xingu River. The Xingu River is one of the most important tributaries
of the Amazon but despite being one of the richest areas in Brazil in terms
of biological and cultural diversity, it is now under threat.

6. De Olho nos Mananciais – Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) – A campaign for conserving
São Paulo´s water sources.

7. Nascentes do Brasil – WWF-Brasil This is an environmental, cultural,
social and mobilisation campaign to protect river headwaters developed by
WWF Brasil.

8. Florestas do Futuro – SOS Mata Altântica  Florestas do Futuro (Forests
of the Future) is a programme developed by Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica (SOS
Atlantic Forest Foundation) for the recovery of deforested areas within the
rainforest which contributes to the preservation water,
