From August 18-29, a cyberseminar sponsored by the Population
Environment Research Network (PERN) and the Environmental Change &
Security Program tackles “Environmentally Induced Population
Displacements.”

In this online seminar, experts and network members will
analyze the evidence for environment’s role in migration, including the
potential for future population displacements as a result of climate
change.

A background paper and expert statements are posted on the PERN
website: http://www.populationenvironmentresearch…

Issues related to environmentally driven migration have been always at
the core of the population-environment studies agenda. Recently, the
topic has commanded more attention because of the potential impacts of
global climate change.

Since 2007, two international events — the Expert Seminar on Migration and Environment organized by IOM and UNFPA; and the Research Workshop on Migration and Environment organized by IOM, UNEP, UNU-EHS and MRF– brought together experts from all over the world to address and assess the issue. An updated working definition of environmental migrants, and an Environmental-Induced Migration Alliance
are among the results of these activities.

This cyberseminar offers a unique opportunity to advance these
discussions by highlighting the experiences, views, and concerns of the
members of the population-environment research community in countries
all over the world. We hope you will join us in this interactive
dialogue.

PERN Cyberseminars are conducted using a standard email discussion
list. To participate, please follow the instructions posted on PERN’s
website:
