The following includes photos by Pincas Jawetz taken in the UN Visitor’s Lobby.
Our photos are of the display of photos of all UN Secretary-Generals since its creation in 1945. The series of portraits was a present to the UN from the Government of Iran.
Each photo has obviously dates for the start and end of the period of years the particular Secretary-General was in office. The ending date is usually inscribed after the change from one Secretary-General to his successor has taken place. This was true until now. Iran seemed interested to snub the present Secretary-General by sending his portrait for a change of date while he is still in office and while no successor has yet been elected.
What if the difficulty in picking his successor continues - and by default he is asked to continue for a while. In present conditions this is actually a possibility. Was Iran not too hasty?
A bout ten days ago Kofi Annan’s portrait was removed by the Iranians. The space on the wall is empty and for all to see. The wags at the UN said the Iranians do not like him and took the Portrait back. We know this was not the case - we believe they will return it eventually - all what they did was to show publicly their disdain for the UN and its Secretary-General. Quite an idea fit for minds that question the Holocaust.
