Etiosa CREDC ( credcsecretariat at yahoo.com) tells us that the Community Research and Development Centre (CREDC), is holding a one-day seminar titled “Renewable Energy: The Key to Sustainable Energy Development in Nigeria”. The one-day event will be held at the Banquet Hall, University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City, Nigeria, on July 18, 2006.

The programme will help to create awareness on renewable energy technologies (RETs) and their potential for sustainable development and build capacity in the civil society to enhance their participation in the forthcoming national multistakeholders’ dialogue to integrate renewable energy into the policy framework of Nigeria. It will also enhance the participation of stakeholders in the on-going global climate change mitigation process as provided by the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol especially the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The event will facilitate the creation of a network of renewable energy advocates (REAs) that will front the development of RETs in Nigeria. And it will serve as medium to make public the Calablar Declaration.

The Calabar Declaration is an international declaration that was written by 65 participants during the conference “Energetic Solutions: An International Conference on Making Renewable Energy a Reality” held in Calabar, Abuja and the Niger Delta in Nigeria from November 21 to 27, 2004. The conference included representatives from countries in Africa, the Americas and Europe, and was a follow-up to the WSSD (2002) and Bonn Renewables conference (2004) to address the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and issues of energy and development. During the programme, papers will be presented by renowned renewable energy experts and environmentalists.

The funds to organize the programme were raised internally from Board members and so we will not be able to finance intending participants. We encourage organizations that can sponsor their members to the programme to please do so. Please you can send us goodwill messages.

CREDC is a non-governmental, non-profit, research and development based organization based in Nigeria. CREDC has been involved in developmental activities on issues relating to water, health, environment and renewable energy.
