While we were transfixed watching Steve Robinson repair the Shuttle,
much
more was going on. Japanese astronaut, Soichi Noguchi made some space
walks and
with spacecraft chief, Commander Eileen Collins who flying her fourth
space
mission, and is a real veteran, at his side, under the Japanese flag,
held a
conversation with Japanese officials including Prime Minister Junichiro
Koizumi.
They reported to this interested audience that they saw widespread
environmental destruction on Earth and warned that greater care was
needed to protect
natural resources. Collins, holding a colorful fan in her hand, said to
the Prime
Minister: “Sometimes you can see how there is erosion, and you can see
how
there is deforestation. It’s very widespread in some parts of the
world.” She
continued by noting that the atmosphere almost looks like an eggshell
on an egg,
it’s so very thin, she said, “We know that we don’t have much air, we
need to
protect what we have.”
My problem is — why did I not see this Reuters depeche picked up in
the US
papers?
Why did this conversation not take place also with US President George
W.
Bush?
