This is the paperback edition of “Modern Jihad” that was reviewed in

The differences between the two volumes are as follows:

  • There is a new foreword by Greg Palast replacing the foreword by
    K.Cooley.

  • There is an added new chapter - #18 - Globalization, Terror’s
    Unwilling
    Ally. pp 209 - 224.

  • There is an Epilogue pp 221 - 232.

The New Foreword starts by saying “Had the White House, back in 2002,
read
and understood Loretta Napoleoni’s outstanding analysis of terror
finances,
most probably America would never have been involved in a costly and
useless
war in Iraq”. Have we been sleeping with the enemy? Napoleoni is
adamant
that “we have been and still are”. He then proceeds listing
relationships
of the US oil industry with figures of Saudi Arabia and the Taliban -
from
Unocal/Taliban in the Clinton times, and to the present Administration
and
the House of Saud.

The added chapter starts with a quote from al-Qaeda - “strikes within
cities
are a type of military diplomacy”. The strikes are intended “to create
a
disruption in the stabilization required for moving the economic sector
towards development”. This gives al-Qaeda justification for sabotaging
oil
wells and pipelines.

After above introduction we read about:

  • The Economic Consequences of September 11.
  • The Patriot Act.
The Black Market Peso Exchange - the system of money laundering
    most
commonly and widely used by Colombian and other South American
    drug
    cartels.

  • The Hawala - the money laundering system predominantly used by the
    Islamist terror groups.

  • Europe: Terror’s New Financial and Logistical Hotbed.
  • The European Mosque Network.
  • Eastern Europe base of European Islamist Network.
  • Funding the European Network.

The new Epilogue starts with the mention of the Saudi al-Sharq al-Awsat
review of an unpublished manuscript by an al-Qaeda theoretician - in
which a
schism was described after 9/11between the Saudi members of the bin
Laden
led group, the Egyptian factions led by Mulah Omar, and the Taliban
that
resented the Arabs for their arrogance. This explains how Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi, a working class uneducated Jordanian managed successfully to
create and fund his own network of Islamist warriors. Napoleoni
believes
that Al-Zarqawi is the offspring of two enemies - Osama bin Laden and
President George W. Bush.

These new Islamist warriors focus their fight on rulers of the Muslim
world,
and the “war on terror” has offered them a fresh ground to re-launch
the
Modern Jihad in Iraq. Al-Zarqawi witnessed the division among the
Arabs and
Afghans in Afghanistan, kept his distance from the Egyptian and Saudi
factions of al-Qaeda, and formed his own group starting with Jordanian
Afghan veterans. His target at first was the Jordanian Government.
Then,
after being caught, released, returned to Afghanistan, eventually
created a
camp near Herat in Western Afganistan, catering to exiled Jordanian,
Palestinian, and Syrian Islamists from Europe, including al-Tawhid
wal-Jihad
(Monotheism and Holy War), competitors for funding of al-Qaeda in
Europe.

They were active in the Casablanca and Istanbul attacks on Jewish
targets.
His “underground railroad” from Europe to Herat went through East
Europe and
Iran and his funding head was a Syrian dentist Abu-al-Ghadiyah with
roots in
the Muslim Brotherhood and working with Syrians exiled in Europe. He
managed to bypass Pakistani control of the Saudi faction’s contacts
with
Afghaniastan; that is also how his organization was not really hurt by
the
American invasion of the Taliban. It is only at the end of 2004 that
al-Zarqawi pledged loyalty to al-Qaeda, changed the name of his
organization
to become the “al-Qaeda in Iraq”, and continue to fight.
